The performance of lithium-ion batteries is continuously improving. For the same battery size, more and more energy can be stored,which provides a higher milage for electric vehicles.

However, the following aspects still have to be improved. They are the foundation for the development of better battery systems, which provide great user experiences in various applications, such as electric vehicles and stationary storage systems.

Fast Charging

Rapid battery charging is a big plus in many applications.

Batteries with fast-charging capabilities enable an electric vehicle to be recharged to 50-80% within few minutes.

Yet, fast charging still deteriorates battery life in most cases.

Battery Aging


Long-lasting battery cells are the core of economic battery systems.

Improving battery life without increasing battery cost is a major goal for current battery developments.

This requires a better understanding of the aging mechanisms inside the battery cells.

Low-Temperature Performance

Available capacity and peak power of a lithium-ion battery diminishes at low temperatures, particularly below 0°C.

In addition to that, accelerated degradation is observed for higher charging as well as higher discharging currents.

To achieve higher driving distances at subzero temperatures, improvements of the low-temperature behavior of the batteries is necessary.

About Me

I am a passionate engineer who has been working with full power in the field of lithium-ion batteries for more than 8 years. In my Ph.D. thesis, I examined thoroughly the aging of lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles.

Gaining a better understanding of the behavior of lithium-ion batteries and finding effective, elegant and efficient solutions for the current technical challenges is what motivates me. To find such solutions, I conduct extensive battery experiments and develop new measurement hardware.

My objective is to help many people with my knowledge and my battery examination tools to improve their understanding of lithium-ion batteries and to develop advanced and long-lasting battery systems in less time.

Modern Measurement Techniques

Advanced battery systems deserve state-of-the-art test procedures.

Whereas energy and power densities of lithium-ion batteries have increased continuously for the last years, the battery testers exhibit only minor improvements.

It is high time, to exploit the potential of new measurement electronics. This enables a higher measurement precision and additional valuable information about the reaction proccesses inside the batteries.

High Precision Coulometry

High Precision Coulometry (HPC)

A current measurement with high resolution and a stable long-term integration of charged and discharged ampere-hours enable the detection of smallest quantities of side reactions.

Moreover, the side reactions can be ascribed to the individual electrodes.

Differential Voltage Analysis

The derivative of the battery voltage curve from a charging or discharging sequence with constant current can be regarded as a characteristic spectrum with various slopes and peaks.

Assigning the different features of that spectrum to the individual electrodes enables a separation between anode degradation, cathode degradation and loss of cyclable lithium.

Elektrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy

EIS exhibits the changes in the impedance characteristics of lithium-ion batteries.

By comparing full-cell measurements with half-cell measurements, the dominating electrode can be identified for various frequency regions.
